2012 Sectional 4 Championship at Fishers High School

Because some of the readers want to know where the game is this next friday night and because I want every opportunity to remind both fan and foe about the score of the HSE game, here is the sectional 4 bracket at this time.

Let's get back to work and focus on putting together strong performance against the McCutcheon Mavericks and take the 2012 Sectional championship!  No opponent gets to this stage without putting it together and bringing good football to the field.

Tigers Win @ Anderson 27-14

Tigers win their sectional opener against Anderson Indians on the road in sloppy conditions.

Going on the road is never easy and doing so on a natural turf turning into slop before kickoff is even more so.  The Tigers surprised some by going to the pass more often than expected after getting a quick turnover thanks to a big hit by Seth Riley on Anderson's Jerian Beard on the first offensive play of the game that forced the fumble and recovery by the Tigers.  Jerian Beard was held to just 40 yards on 15 carries.

Fishers was able to score off that turnover and would take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

Anderson, with an offense averaging more than 30 points per game, was kept off the scoreboard most of the game thanks to the Tiger defense and sloppy conditions.

The final score of 27-14 is not indicative of the Tiger domination on the night.  Anderson's ability to put up a lot of points and the weather conditions left Tigers players and staff more than pleased to hustle out of Anderson with the first round sectional win and the chance to play next week.

Leading the Fishers running attack that had a total of 109 yards was Maurice Campbell with 59 yards on 16 rushes and Harvey Allen with 40 yards on 7 carries and a TD.

The Fishers passing attack was 13-22 for a total of 208 yards and 3 TDs.  Highlighting the receiving corps for Tigers was J-Shun Harris who had 7 catches for 108 yards and 2 TDs on the night.  His long TD reception of 35 yards was for a touchdown and highlighted his ability to sucker the defender and get to the ball.

On the Anderson side, their offense was highlighted by Senior QB Curtis Wilson's 284 yards on 12 for 23 attempts and 2 TDs.  His 3 interceptions were costly as was the earlier fumble by Beard.
Next week will be intense as the second round sectional opponent will be none other than the Royals.

Motivational Videos

You have offered yourself to this team and the quest for victory.  You have put the hard work in almost every day of the year with this quest in mind.  Now is the time.  Do not let yourself down.  Do not let your team mates down.  Enjoy the gift that has been bestowed upon you as you begin a new path into this year's playoffs.  You now have ZERO wins and ZERO losses and this season is in your control -- CONTROL THAT NEXT PLAY, THAT NEXT SNAP, THAT NEXT OPPONENT!!  Without this mindset, the field can turn against you and you may not get the chance tomorrow.

Remember all of the time, the sweat, the pain you have put into being in the position that you are in and do what you do best.  You have the skills, the strength, and the desire to win so don't leave anything for an opponent to take anything from you!  The opponent wants to defeat you and inflict pain on you - take it personal!

You have our hearts and minds with you and we have faith in you but it is your faith alone that matters the greatest.  On the gridiron, between the sidelines, what happens is YOUR CHOICE and that choice on friday night is simple.  Play your game, your way!

Good luck Tiger men!

Anderson Preview

Tigers @ Anderson, Friday Oct 19, 7pm
4610 Madison Avenue, Anderson, IN
North Central Conference opponent Anderson(4-5) is coached by Randy Albano who is 14-15 at Anderson and in his 3rd year as head coach and, at  press time, has no known relationship to Captain Lou Albano at the time of press.  Anderson comes into sectional play after having their biggest victory of the season, a 41-33 win over 6-3 Kokomo on the road.

One thing is clear in looking at the Anderson season - they can put up points, averaging 36.4 points per game.  The other thing that is clear -- they can also give up a lot of points.  Early in the year, the Anderson defense was inexperienced and opponents were able to keep them out of balance.  Anderson played their first 2 games against very good Greenwood and Pendleton Heights teams.  Tough teams to pit inexperienced defense against.

Other than the loss to Huntington North, all of Anderson's losses were against teams that were able to generate an exceptional rushing attack .  Greenwood, with their option attack, put up a total of 398 yards rushing against Anderson and Marion was able to run for a total of 388 yards.

Anderson is on the wrong side of the IHSAA record books due to the 9 passing TD night by Huntington North senior QB Drew Schnitz.  Schnitz was 21 of 36 for 380 yards in that game.  Schnitz was also able to run 18 times for 173 yards against Anderson.

In Anderson's 1st 3 wins, they were able to run the ball effectively and are led by junior RB Jerian Beard.  Beard has 1,131 yards rushing on 140 runs(8.1 yards per carry) for a total of 17 TDs on the ground this season.   Other than the junior running back, Anderson offensive starters are all seniors so the offense is experienced.

In Anderson's win over Kokomo last week, their passing was more of a difference maker with 263 yards passing while adding 101 yards on the ground.  Anderson senior QB Curtis Wilson was 21 of 31 for 263 yards.  Wilson's favorite target is fellow senior WR Chris Lemon who has 40 catches for 670 yards and 9 TDs.  On the losing side, Kokomo was still able to run the ball 49 times for 301 total yards but only put up 90 passing yards.

On the year, Anderson QB Curtis Wilson is 106 for 171 passing for a total of 1,407 yards, 18 TDs, 3 INTs.  He is an experienced field general having started at Anderson for 3 years.

The Tigers will need to harness the Anderson running game and play tight and controlled in the secondary against receiver options.  I do not expect a friendly atmosphere from fans and Tigers on the field will need to play to avoid the questionable call on the road that could cost the team and keep the Anderson offense on the field.

Offensively, Tigers need to make sure to not give the ball up and control the clock for 4 quarters, leaving less opportunities for Anderson and giving the Tiger defense chances to rest.  Each possession will be important to put some kind of points on the board, preferrably TDs, but to also not give Anderson any kind of favorable field position from which to work from (I know that's not a revelation!).  Given the success of opponents running the ball against Anderson, Tigers want the running game to put up effective yardage and our passing to be quick and efficient for short receptions that could turn into big plays or the big play (again, not a revelation for success in any game, any week!).

The Tigers will be hungry to take on a non-conference sectional opponent and keep the season alive.  After all, now it is win or die for the 2012 season!

Tigers Defeated By Brownsburg

Fishers Tigers lose 31-0 in a tough regular season final against Brownsburg who get through the Hoosier Crossroads Conference undefeated.

The offense failed to generate yardage and with offensive line blocking left the Tigers scoreless for the first time since the 2009 sectional loss to Carmel.  The absence of Conner Christiansen was noticeable and abundant Tiger turnovers allowed Brownsburg to take their 9th victory of the season with no losses.

Next week, the Tigers will be traveling to Anderson for 1st round of sectional play.  A review of Anderson's record shows they can put points up easily but have defensively had trouble.  At the time of this write up, we have learned that Anderson has surprised Kokomo.  Given the offensive troubles currently for Fishers, this is not great news and certainly a different outlook from just a few hours earlier.

Bottom line is the Fishers defense can't win games without an effective offense that can maintain control of the ball and get first downs.  In losses against Zionsville and Brownsburg, the Tigers have been unable to generate the kind of yardage on the ground that has propelled them to victories.

More analysis of Anderson will be coming next week and this fan hopes we can find that the running game has every chance to come alive.  If not, it could be a very humbling trip to an inferior foe in sectional play.

Brownsburg Preview

Oct 12, vs Brownsburg, 8-0
@ FHS 7pm
The 2012 Hoosier Crossroads Conference champion comes to Fishers for the final regular season.  These teams have squared off in some heated battles over the years and the Brownsburg Bulldogs would like to definitely rub the Tigers' noses in the fact they are champs and potentially undefeated.

Brownsburg has been able to put up 34 points per game and brings the leading defense in the conference only giving up 10 points per game.  The offense has been a combination of grind it out running and big plays that have sunk HCC opponents.  Senior IU commit, Chase Dutra is the leader of this team that has made big plays and freshman RB Toks Akinribade will run it down the middle regularly.  Dutra has rushed 58 times for 356 yards and 2 TDs while catching 15 for 351 yards and 3 TDs.  Akinribade has rushed 142 times for 668 yards and 11 TDs and Tigers will need to hit him early, low and wrap him.  Senior QB Ian Good is well balanced passing for 62% completion percentage and 819 yards and 7 TDs while also running 49 times for 225 yards for 4 TDs.

The Brownsburg stats alone don't tell the story of the physical play that moves them down the field.  While widely revered as a flashy, big play team, it is the punch and dive play that has elevated Brownsburg.

When Brownsburg gives the ball back to opponents, their defense has gotten it back quickly and, on the punt return, Dutra poses the real threat in any game against Brownsburg -- the big play.  Dutra is not someone that you want getting the ball with a chance to run.

Tigers need a good win and stopping Brownsburg's quest for an undefeated season would do that for sure.

Maurice Campbell Runs Tigers to 6th Win of Season

Tigers win 28-7 on the road against Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos.

Maurice Campbell had a spectacular night running 8 times for 199 yards that included three long touchdown runs that helped the Fishers Tigers secure their 6th win of the 2012 season against Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos.

The Tigers defense was able to hold the Bronchos rushing attack down and held conference leading rusher Darian Green to just 30 yards on 18 carries.

With the rain coming down and having to play without starting QB Connor Christiansen, the Tigers were glad the running game performed on this night and even more pleased that they were able to handle the very quick and agile Broncho running game.

The Tigers, now 6-2, will be looking to ruin conference champ Brownsburg's quest for an undefeated season.

Preview of Lafayette Jefferson

Oct. 5 @ Scheumann Stadium
1801 S. 18th St., Lafayette
Coming off a tough week, the Tigers will be visiting Scheumann Stadium to take on a possibly rejuvenated 3-4 Lafayette Jeff Broncho team coming off a huge program 30-27 win over Avon last week.  The Bronchos played well and want to add to that performance and prove it was not a fluke or that Avon is not slipping into the second tier of the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.

The Bronchos already have the conference's leading rusher in junior RB Darian Green who has rushed 138 times for 1,007 yards in 7 games this year adding 11 TDs on the ground.  They may also be adding some competent receivers who managed to make no drops against Avon and allowed junior QB Matt Johnson to get some needed relief.

While still a stronger runner than passer, Matt Johnson becomes a much more balanced threat with the receivers catching the ball better now, led by junior WRs Austin Albrecht and Tim Wilson, who helped spark the win over Avon.  Matt Johnson added 105 yards rushing, leading the team against Avon, and 2 TDs.  Darian Green topped the 1,000 yard mark for the season rushing 27 times for 77 yards as Avon keyed on the leading rusher.

The Broncho passing efficiency, leaving lanes open for Matt Johnson and the usual special teams relapses left Avon with their 3rd loss of the season, one they no doubt did not see coming on the bus ride to Lafayette.  A lesson to be learned on the buildup for the Tigers trip.

Matt Johnson and Darian Green are both very fast with great deal of agility in open field.   The Tigers defense will need to corral these Bronchos quickly before they get loose.  Bronchos have been run first, pass second all season and that could be shifted a little bit allowing more rest for a lethal rushing attack.

If the Bronchos don't use their speed on offensive snaps, they can certainly bring it into play during kick returns.  Last week against Avon, big returns of 76 yards by Darian Green and 67 yards by sprinter Carl McQuay set up a field goal and a return TD respectively.  I believe Carl McQuay is definitely the fastest man on the field for either team given his high school track accolades.

Bronchos offensive line were able to keep Avon's Elijah Daniel at bay, led by Daniel Nelson and Sam McKay.  Having not seen them play this year, I assume these are the two strongest offensive lineman that the Tigers will have to contend with.

The Bronchos are on the record claiming this was the way they were supposed to be playing all along and  are certainly a more balanced offensive threat.  This coming off a tough week full of questions for Fishers defense and offense both, could prove to be taller challenge than originally anticipated.

Please Tigers, take care of business!
