Anderson Preview

Tigers @ Anderson, Friday Oct 19, 7pm
4610 Madison Avenue, Anderson, IN
North Central Conference opponent Anderson(4-5) is coached by Randy Albano who is 14-15 at Anderson and in his 3rd year as head coach and, at  press time, has no known relationship to Captain Lou Albano at the time of press.  Anderson comes into sectional play after having their biggest victory of the season, a 41-33 win over 6-3 Kokomo on the road.

One thing is clear in looking at the Anderson season - they can put up points, averaging 36.4 points per game.  The other thing that is clear -- they can also give up a lot of points.  Early in the year, the Anderson defense was inexperienced and opponents were able to keep them out of balance.  Anderson played their first 2 games against very good Greenwood and Pendleton Heights teams.  Tough teams to pit inexperienced defense against.

Other than the loss to Huntington North, all of Anderson's losses were against teams that were able to generate an exceptional rushing attack .  Greenwood, with their option attack, put up a total of 398 yards rushing against Anderson and Marion was able to run for a total of 388 yards.

Anderson is on the wrong side of the IHSAA record books due to the 9 passing TD night by Huntington North senior QB Drew Schnitz.  Schnitz was 21 of 36 for 380 yards in that game.  Schnitz was also able to run 18 times for 173 yards against Anderson.

In Anderson's 1st 3 wins, they were able to run the ball effectively and are led by junior RB Jerian Beard.  Beard has 1,131 yards rushing on 140 runs(8.1 yards per carry) for a total of 17 TDs on the ground this season.   Other than the junior running back, Anderson offensive starters are all seniors so the offense is experienced.

In Anderson's win over Kokomo last week, their passing was more of a difference maker with 263 yards passing while adding 101 yards on the ground.  Anderson senior QB Curtis Wilson was 21 of 31 for 263 yards.  Wilson's favorite target is fellow senior WR Chris Lemon who has 40 catches for 670 yards and 9 TDs.  On the losing side, Kokomo was still able to run the ball 49 times for 301 total yards but only put up 90 passing yards.

On the year, Anderson QB Curtis Wilson is 106 for 171 passing for a total of 1,407 yards, 18 TDs, 3 INTs.  He is an experienced field general having started at Anderson for 3 years.

The Tigers will need to harness the Anderson running game and play tight and controlled in the secondary against receiver options.  I do not expect a friendly atmosphere from fans and Tigers on the field will need to play to avoid the questionable call on the road that could cost the team and keep the Anderson offense on the field.

Offensively, Tigers need to make sure to not give the ball up and control the clock for 4 quarters, leaving less opportunities for Anderson and giving the Tiger defense chances to rest.  Each possession will be important to put some kind of points on the board, preferrably TDs, but to also not give Anderson any kind of favorable field position from which to work from (I know that's not a revelation!).  Given the success of opponents running the ball against Anderson, Tigers want the running game to put up effective yardage and our passing to be quick and efficient for short receptions that could turn into big plays or the big play (again, not a revelation for success in any game, any week!).

The Tigers will be hungry to take on a non-conference sectional opponent and keep the season alive.  After all, now it is win or die for the 2012 season!
